From kids to teenagers to men, we make mistakes daily. However, we learn from our mistakes and rectify them to improve.
But some mistakes we make that we didn’t probably know that we were making them – Fashion Mistakes.
When you grow up, your fashion sense grows, wherever you go you dress to make a lasting good impression, whether it’s professional job interviews, casual friend outings, or even night parties.
But making style mistakes will make your appearance fail. Although, if you notice, your confidence will break instantly.
That’s why looking out for these style mistakes is important for men.
After observing 1000 men (both online and offline), I’ve listed the 20 dumbest men’s fashion mistakes to avoid at all costs.
Why correcting these mistakes is necessary?
You may probably not be aware of the fashion mistakes you make daily. But making it will indirectly affect your life.
Let’s say for example: You are heading to a professional job interview where employees are wearing business casual outfits.
And you decide to make an impression during the interview. So you are opting for a sleek dress shirt paired with nice dress pants and finishing off the outfit with dress shoes.
You are in a hurry so you don’t notice the uncleaned, unpolished shoes, and you forget to iron the dress shirt.
After heading to the office space with full inner confidence, suddenly you see your uncleaned dirty shoes of yours. You’ll feel instant heartache if the interviewer calls you for a direct one-on-one interview.
Leave the interviewer and other members in the setting behind, they may notice or may not. What do you feel at that time? Your confidence will break and the chances of losing the interview are high as well.
That’s why rectifying these style mistakes men is necessary. Style or fashion mistakes in the sense not mentioning just about dressing, it includes everything about you and yourself.
20 Men’s Fashion Mistakes to Avoid
I’m currently working in a 9 to 5 job, require to travel around 2 hours a day. I’ve been observing 100s of 1000s of men every day (both online and offline), men’s style mistakes they make.
So, based on this observation, I’m listing 20 common fashion mistakes men make that you need to avoid at all costs. These men’s fashion mistakes include everything from styling outfits to grooming.
Worst Hygiene
A Reason I listed this first is because I felt this before.
The first and Worst fashion mistake is bad hygiene practices. Good hygiene is necessary for men to smell good.
Your body will generate sweats overnight and odor-causing bacteria strives. Without bathing, these things will create a smell and make uncomfortable for people around you.
Worst hygiene will create a bad impression on you and also make you uncomfortable for people around you.
What happens when your crush comes closer to talk to you and you smell as bad as?
It’ll make things even worse, so, this is the first fashion mistakes men make that you need to avoid. Make sure to bath daily in the morning and apply a nice cologne or fragrance.

Grooming Mistakes
Another Mistake is bad grooming. For instance, improperly maintaining beard and hair, un-styled hair, and others.
These grooming mistakes make a big impact on your overall appearance and fail to make a first good impression. Without proper grooming, unnecessary judging will rise in people’s minds.
Moreover, you probably have a professional lifestyle where you want to go to an office space or business meeting. Proper grooming is crucial for most of the business and office environments.
Some bad grooming mistakes you probably make (Based on the observation) are:
- Uncombed hair

Unmatched Socks
Wearing formal outfits ultimately requires a nice pair of shoes with matching socks to finish off the outfit.
But as of my observation, I see guys wearing unmatched color socks for dress shoes.
Which got my eyes on it. It looks completely odd and makes people spot it instantly without thinking. While choosing the socks for the outfit, you need to consider things like:
- Choose a sock color that matches the pant
- Make sure your socks have no holes
- Avoid wearing flashy colored socks
- If you are confused, don’t pick pattern socks
By considering all these things you can effortlessly choose the right color socks that suit your outfit. Also, make sure of the length and fit of the socks.
Food Smell from Breathing
I’ve encountered this most of the time: my colleagues had breakfast in the morning, and when they reached the office space, they came nearby to talk.
I can instantly guess what they had for breakfast.
While having breakfast, the small food particles will be stored in between our teeth. This will create a bad smell when talking and breathing, making an embarrassing situation.
So, after having food, water-floss your mouth to remove small food particles. Also, consider using mouthwash for a pleasant smell.
Dirty Clothes
Another fashion mistake most men often make is opting for dirty clothes. If you think no one going to notice you anyway, you are wrong.
People around you will notice your appearance every day, such as what you are wearing, whether you wore it the right way, and many other things, and they will judge you by that.
I noticed that many guys were wearing clothes with specks of dirt everywhere, particularly dirty pants.
Usually, when we walk, the dust on the land will make our pants dirty. When it makes your pants dirty, make sure to dust off using your hands right away.

Wearing Sunglasses Indoors
Sunglasses are usually for the outdoors, especially in the summer season. When the sun rises, the flare will reflect on the sunglasses and give us a brighter appearance.
But what’s the reason for wearing indoors? I saw one guy wearing sunglasses inside the metro train and I also noticed a few people staring at the guy in a fun way.
It’s fine to wear specs indoors, but sunglasses are specifically designed for outdoors and cannot be worn indoors.
Tucking in an Oversized Dress Shirt
The dress shirt’s ideal fit is the classic or slim fit.
Oversized is inappropriate when it comes to men’s dress shirts. It needs to fit you right so that it can be well tucked in with pants.
I’ve also noticed guys wearing oversized dress shirts and dumping all the excessive fabrics inside their pants.
A Formal outfit needs to be well-refined, dumping an oversized dress shirt tucked in pants makes you look sloppy.
So, when opting for a dress shirt for formal attire, go bespoke and tailor-made just for you.
This way the dress shirt will perfectly tuck inside the pants without any excessive fabrics popping out.

Men Wearing Skinny Jeans
Skinny-fit jeans are not made for guys – End of debate. I saw lean guys wearing skinny-fit jeans which made me think, “Does he have any idea what he is wearing”.
Most of the fitness models, and gym freaks used to wear skinny jeans to show off their thigh muscles. But still looks bad when wearing skinny-fit jeans.
For men, classic, slim, straight, slim tapered fits look fine. Skinny fit is inappropriate for men, although, it makes the leg look shorter.
Uncleaned Shoes
Another style mistake I noticed it wearing uncleaned shoes.
A quote I found from the abyss of the internet is, “When someone wants to judge you, they will look at your shoes”. Wearing unclean shoes will create a bad image of you.
Especially when you are wearing refined formal attire, your shoes speak volumes. The majority of the guys I observed are opting for uncleaned and not polished dress shoes.
No, shoes are the one that finishes off any outfit in style. Wearing uncleaned shoes will completely ruin your overall appearance.
It doesn’t matter whether you are wearing a million-dollar suit. Clean the shoes before wearing and make sure to wear shoes that match your outfit.
Unpleasant Smell From Footwear and socks
The Most embarrassing moment I experienced with my office colleagues.
You may have encountered this. Imagine you are sitting in an office space peacefully. Suddenly some bad smell is coming but you can’t tell where it is coming from.
Then you realize that one of your colleagues sitting aside just realized his scent factory after 100 years of not cleaning.
Yes, you guessed it right. He just removed his shoes for relaxation which makes you unrelaxed. Never make this mistake, it’ll make your fellas uncomfortable sitting beside you.
Always wash your shoes once every two weeks and your socks after every use.
Overflowing Men’s Accessories
Accessories are used to enhance the outfit. But not carefully wearing will completely break your appearance. Especially when it comes to, “what outfit you are wearing”.
For instance, if you wear complete formal attire, fewer accessories are better. If it’s casuals, you can opt for a few more for enhancement.
Likewise, accessories play for each outfit style accordingly. As of my observation, most of the guys have yet to learn to wear accessories the right way.
If you doubt, just opt for one classic watch, ring, bracelet, and necklace and that’s enough to elevate any outfit you wear. Comes to formal attire, add a belt and go beyond like tie and all.

Ankle Fit Going to Far
Ankle-fit pants are getting trendier these days, but people have misunderstood what the ideal ankle-fit pant style is.
The ideal style of this pant fit is slightly (not overly) cropped above the ankles. But what I observed is different. Guys are wearing ankle-fit pants that reach the calf area.
Which is inappropriate, right? I know there is a pant-fit style called calf-length pants. But how about wearing jeans that reach the calf area?
General rules: a man’s pants should never go above the ankle bone. Speaking of ankle fit, you can wear pants slightly cropped above the ankle area to style.
This style of pants perfectly matches and is unique when worn with loafers. So, never go too far when it comes to ankle-fit pants.
Overly Saturated Colors
Yes, choosing the right color combination can be frustrating sometimes. But wearing overly saturated colors is not the solution.
These color outfits are too flashy. It makes you look like you don’t have any fashion sense and all.
Avoid choosing overly saturated colors.
Instead, you can choose neutrals like navy, grey, black, white, tan, and earthy tones like olive green, brown, mustard yellow, beige, khaki, and other related ones.
These color options are versatile and beginner-friendly, easily matching with each color within.

Wearing Torned Shirts
This may occur due to lethargy or oversight, but some people are wearing torn shirts. These tears could be caused by sharp edges we inadvertently encounter without noticing.
Or clothes that age may get torn by nature.
Check out your shirts for any big noticeable torn before wearing them. If it has any, just throw it away and buy a new quality shirt that lasts for a few years.
Wearing torn shirts will make people think that you don’t have money to buy new clothes.
Not Properly Wearing Ties
As a professional employee or businessperson, all eyes are on you.
However, wearing a tie properly is not always a priority for some professional men it seems. I’ve noticed some men opt for business casual attire but wear their ties improperly.
Some loosen their ties and unbutton the top shirt button, while others wear their ties so tightly that they appear uncomfortable.
Additionally, some ties are positioned improperly, with one side coming to the front.
Also, some guys wear ties that are either too long or too short in length. The ideal tie length is for it to reach the belly button when you are standing.
A tie is completely a professional accessory that needs to be worn right for a well-refined look.
Bulging Pockets
Another big common fashion mistake is bulging pants or shirt pockets by putting things inside. Everyone, even myself has made this style mistake daily.
Putting smartphones or bulky wallets inside a pant pocket is not the right way. I see not most men, all men making this mistake.
Instead, you can carry a small sling bag and place every necessary thing like a cardholder, wallet, or smartphone inside so that you won’t need to bulge your pant pockets.
Formal Outfit with Sandals
Formal outfits are a professional outfit that gives a more well-refined appearance.
There are certain rules when wearing formal outfits, one such is finishing off the outfit with nice formal shoes like oxfords, derbies, brogues, loafers, and more.
But as of my observation, some guys wearing a nice formal outfit with sandals. It’s inappropriate and doesn’t suit formal outfits.
When wearing formal outfits, you need to opt for well-polished dress shoes that match the outfit.
Neckline Beard Shaping Goes Beyond
Some guys may have misunderstood what the real neckline beard shaping looks like. I’ve noticed a few guys have shaped the neckline beard too far.
If you are unsure of how to shape a beard, you can go to a professional barber or stylist. But if you want to try it on your own, make sure to do it the right way.
- Just examine your neckbeard line on the mirror and know exactly where to take the shape.
- Now look straight and slightly lift your head. You’ll see the line of the head that meets the neck.
- Take the trimmer remove the clip, and trim the excessive beard upward.
- Make sure to look out for the line.
- Use the trimmer downward to completely remove small hairs to shave look
- Also, take the line on the sides of the beard.
Color Faded Clothes
Some guys have opted for color-faded clothes. Usually, the color of shirts, and t-shirts, will get fade on the neck area, which goes unnoticed by us and is easily noticeable to others.
Color-faded clothes often look dull. If you opt for a shirt, make sure to check if the colors are faded or washed out completely. A few things that make your clothes color fade:
- Old clothes
- Low-quality clothes
- Poor quality material
- Often washing clothes
And others. Always make sure the clothes you are wearing are in good condition without color fading.
Dress Shirts Untucked
Dress shirts are the heart of a formal outfit.
Of course, its versatility makes it suitable for any outfit you are wearing apart from formal wear. But I noticed men wearing nice dress pants with well-polished shoes with untucked dress shirts.
When wearing complete formal attire, the dress shirt needs to be well and neatly tucked, that’s it.
Additionally, the dress shirt needs to be clean, neat and well-ironed before wearing to give a sleek and well-refined appearance.
